One of the basic functions we use every day, in life and at work, is communication. One would think that since we’ve been talking from a very young age that effective communication is woven into our DNA.

Turns out, effective communication is something you learn, not something you’re born with.

As famous author George Bernard Shaw said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

This is borne out by the fact that communication problems are cited as the most common factor that leads to divorce. And it’s just as vital in the workplace – one study found that companies that communicate effectively had a 47% higher return to shareholders over a five-year period.

That’s valid for a small business too. Good communication can increase productivity and help resolve issues in the workplace. Without it, a business is prone to lost revenue, employee conflict, and a hostile work environment.
