Why is nutrition the key to otherwise unresolving chiropractic cases, today more than ever?
I believe it's because malnutrition has become the norm rather than the exception. Dr. Royal Lee identified the problem more than half a century ago:
"We have drifted into this deplorable position of national malnutrition quite inadvertently. It is the result of scientific research with the objective of finding the best ways to create foods that are non-perishable that can be made by mass production methods in central factories, and distributed so cheaply that they can sweep all local competition from the market."
The truth of Dr. Lee's provocative statement may not have been self-evident in the 1950s, but today it is indisputable. In the mad rush for ever-greater shelf life and speed of preparation, nutritional considerations have been swept aside in today's supermarkets, or at best, relegated to the "Greenwise" shelf. The toxin-induced subluxations D.D. Palmer warned about 100 years ago are far more prevalent than even he could have foreseen.
I know whereof I speak. In my own case, the best chiropractic adjustments available could not arrest the precipitous decline of my health in 1991, let alone reverse it. To save my own life, I had to accelerate the advance of clinical nutrition beyond what the pioneers of the subject had achieved.
I was unable even to continue in practice until I recovered my own health sufficiently, with the help of a colleague implementing my new techniques, which I called Nutrition Response Testing.
Today, I am delighted to say that over 500 practitioners have attained a level of clinical mastery surpassing what I was able to achieve in my own practice in the 1990s. A few elected to specialize in nutrition almost exclusively, but a great many more have achieved a balance of chiropractic and nutrition in smoothly integrated, stress-free (and largely insurance-free) practices.
Many of these chiropractors were interviewed during our December, 2014 Symposium to discover the common denominators that enable these integrated chiropractic/Nutrition Response Testing practices to function so smoothly. Six of their stories have been chosen to appear in this issue.

Before I got into Nutrition Response Testing, I was mainly practicing chiropractic. I did dabble in nutrition, and I was always interested and excited about nutrition, but I didn’t quite know how to implement it in the patient visit. I just sort of threw it in during the patient visit—to the detriment of the practice, simply because it wasn’t efficient and I wasn’t getting paid for what I was doing.
When I took up Nutrition Response Testing, I started separating out the visits, and I was much more able to handle a lot of the subluxation issues that were occurring, because a lot of those, I’ve realized, are nutritionally based, and unless you handle the nutrition, you’re not going to be able to get that adjustment to hold. So, since separating my visits, my practice has actually quadrupled, and it’s only going to continue.
A patient came to me with low back pain, and I gave him an adjustment. He did well for a few days, then his chronic low back pain returned, so I gave him a few more visits. I decided, “This has to be a nutritional issue.” So I did a Nutrition Response Testing evaluation on him, and put him on supplements that were necessary to handle the weak areas. He came back the next visit and the problem was gone.
My name is Dr. Guy Furno. I’m a chiropractor from New York. I’ve been a Nutrition Response Testing master clinician since 2009.
Originally in practice, I didn’t integrate any nutrition into the practice at all. What I was finding over time was that patients had to keep on coming in and getting adjusted over and over again. I have patients that have been with me for 25 years. They were doing well, they were happy, they were functioning, but—they weren’t holding their adjustments. Something was lacking, and it wasn’t technique. They shouldn’t be having to get adjusted for ten years in the same area over and over again.
Over a century ago, D.D. Palmer identified nutrition as one of the most important facets of keeping these patients well. Once I integrated Nutrition Response Testing into the practice, patients began holding their adjustments. Fewer visits, yes, but supplement sales and referrals more than made up the difference.
On a personal level, it feels great that you’re actually accomplishing what you were looking to accomplish originally, which is really to get these patients better and get them on a more functional track.
Recently, a long-term chiropractic patient of 20+ years started getting a different pattern of pain. We did Nutrition Response Testing, got him onto the correct program, and the pain went away.
I’m Dr. Brian Walsh, a chiropractor in West Melbourne, Florida. I’ve been in practice fifteen years, and I’ve been doing Nutrition Response Testing for ten of those years.
Nutrition Response Testing gave me the right tools to integrate nutrition into my chiropractic practice. The majority of the chronic cases that were not resolving—that kept coming back with the same problem—turned around with Nutrition Response Testing.
Well, the picture from 50-60 years ago to now has changed so dramatically with the quality of our food, with the toxins in our environment, that your average person cannot even hold an adjustment very well without some assistance. Once you get them on a Nutrition Response Testing program they start holding their adjustments, they’re happier, they refer others for general wellness in addition to chiropractic.
By incorporating Nutrition Response Testing, you actually broaden your audience. Instead of just, “Oh, well you’re just a chiropractor, you do chiropractic therapy,” people start looking at you as a wellness doctor. And that becomes another platform. So we can introduce people to non-invasive nutrition therapy, so that they don’t have to go down that road of medicine or surgery or those other items.
I’ve got a patient in her late thirties—very active, two young kids—who used to run marathons. Then she developed injuries and the medical establishment told her she’d never be able to run again.
This girl, after being under Nutrition Response Testing care for several months, is back to running again, feels fabulous, the chronic pain she had for the longest time is gone. She feels like she’s got a life back again with her kids.
My father was a chiropractor. I used to see his patients get a few adjustments and then they’d be gone! It was holding and they were doing fine. But as time went on, the adjustments weren’t holding.
Thanks to Dr. Ulan, I actually get the full results of my chiropractic despite all the new dietary and environmental challenges. All my patients who are on Nutrition Response Testing programs, their adjustments hold!
When I first started practicing in 1988, people would come to me for maybe five or six adjustments and do pretty well. Well, as time went on, it took about ten adjustments to accomplish what five used to in 1988. Then it was taking fifteen. There were exceptions: patients that seemed to eat better and were healthier held their adjustments much longer. Was nutrition the missing component? I started selling more supplements, but it was hit or miss.
When I got into Nutrition Response Testing, people started holding their adjustments much much longer, with observable improvement in the areas we were concentrating on.
